Did you know that slavery still exists?

Today, it is known as human trafficking -- the practice of illegally transporting people from one country or area to another, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation.

Since 2011, the United States Senate has designated January 11th as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, prompting UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) to declare January to be a month dedicated to Human Trafficking Awareness in order to help prevent this cruelty that nobody should have to go through.

And so, IHS UNICEF like to invite you to come to our club meeting on Friday, January 13th during lunch in K-35 so that you, too, can learn how to combat the modern-day cruelty that is known as human trafficking. We'll be having a special guest speaker directly from UNICEF!

Human trafficking is prevalent even in the Bay Area. Attending our meeting may help equip you with the knowledge that could potentially save someone else's life.

*Lights on Trafficking is a club that focuses directly on spreading awareness about the unequal rights and conditions of individuals who are forced into modern day slavery.

If you want to learn what you can do to help raise awareness about human trafficking all-year round, attend the meetings held every Wednesday in K-34!

To All Students:

Driving to Independence High School and parking your vehicle at school requires a school-issued parking permit and is a privilege, not a right.

Student parking permits must be obtained within the first ten days of the school year. After that the permit must be obtained prior to driving the vehicle to school. Permits are to be obtained in the N-1 office from Ms. Holguin.

The parking lots are off-limits to all students during school hours. Loitering and hanging out in the parking lots are not allowed. Independence is a closed campus so there are no in-and-out driving privileges during the school day.

Students are not permitted to use their vehicle as a locker or as a storage place for items that will be needed during the school day.
